Wednesday, December 6 Rumours abound that the Chrétien government promise to establish a national portrait gallery is coming to fruition, but the federal government has decided to build it in Calgary rather than in the old American embassy in Ottawa. Which I think is good news - Alberta may be prosperous and affluent, but it is a desert when it comes to the arts. The opposition in Ottawa is suggesting it is "pork barrel politics" - and a keen eye they must have for recognizing it given their record on the topic - but I think it is a great move. Calgary is Canada's fastest growing city, both by population and economically, but to sustain that level of growth they are going to need some development of arts and culture, the softer side of policy. posted by Duncan @ 7:44 AM © 2003-2010 Duncan Wojtaszek No reproduction whatsoever, in any form, without permission. I actually do think it's pork barrel politics, and I don't think two wrongs make a right. A lot of money has already been put into developing the gallery, and it's a waste of taxpayers funds to reverse the project now.
That being said, the federal government does need to start developing museums across the country and places like Winnipeg and Calgary should be getting way more support than they are now.

You will note I never said it wasn't pork barrel politics, I merely said that it was great that Calgary was getting some love.

And transportation - specifically, public transportation - you can't develop into an international city with a train that people can't access.
