Thursday, February 23 I wonder if I would prefer a Team Canada gold in ice hockey but no other medals to this. No, probably not. The women's team win makes up for a lot. Still, it hurts. That said, we won two gold and two silver medals yesterday in sports that are not hockey. Woo! I am sick. Words can't describe the poor timing of this - there is the final stretch at work and in the immediate future there is a conference this weekend. I have to pull it together. posted by Duncan @ 7:45 AM 0 comments Monday, February 20 I saw Brokeback Mountain this weekend - it was very good. Haunting. My two favourite reviewers, Roger Ebert and Peter Travers said it best, so I'll leave you with their two reviews. But the tragedy was so touching and so real. Forbidden love is always so heartbreaking, especially when it is left unfulfilled. UPDATE: If you haven't seen it, go and see Lost and Delirious if you enjoyed Brokeback Mountain. Brokeback Mountain had far better scenery, but the stories were both similar and very good. posted by Duncan @ 10:44 AM 0 comments Wednesday, February 15 What follows is to a measure a Valentine's Day story from hell, but the truth is I had a great Valentine's Day because I had the best valentine and love cures all wounds. My plan for the day was to give a Valentine's Day card complete with two tickets to Stomp hidden inside. The evening before I stopped at a local tavern for a glass of ale with a couple of colleagues from work (it sounds so much classier when I say it like that - you can fill in the details of what I actually mean) and with me that night was the card and tickets. It was to be perfect. However, to reach that, I would need to keep track of the leather portfolio that contained the card and tickets. But that was apparently not to be. So, the first part of Valentine's Day was not an exchange of cards but the receipt of card and gift by me from Allie. And then a mad recounting of the night before (which after said ale was slightly more hazy than would normally be the case) which led me to decide to call the Transit Lost and Found and O'Byrnes, the bar we visited. Neither had a clue where it was. The rest of the day was fantastic except I felt so out of sorts that while I remembered to replace the card, pick up the makings of butter chicken (I had decided to make Allie a meal instead of going out) and also got a red tablecloth and red candles I forgot to replace the gift. I even remembered the wine. Sigh. And something I will have to remedy with future grovelling and acts. But all was not for lost, because as I said I have an understanding wife (my card to her even said so, I picked it to ensure such a message was delivered). posted by Duncan @ 6:57 PM 0 comments Saturday, February 11 Ah, Saturday is here. It feels like it has been a long time coming, even if I took a day off last week (I had a fever on Monday night and took Tuesday off). Today is also the day we have a family meeting to decide how to approach our prosperity bonus from the Government of Alberta. I'm nervous. We each had to draw up proposals for our $400 so we could talk about them as a family. I wonder what everyone will have to say. It a less vital event for me than originally thought, as my prosperity bonus remains stuck in the ether. I get to call Revenue Canada on Monday to ask them where it is. Yahoo. posted by Duncan @ 8:25 AM 0 comments Tuesday, February 7 It would appear that after one day of comments from both the right and left, I am wrong (or at least in the minority) - most feel that Stephen Harper assed up his cabinet. posted by Duncan @ 10:56 PM 0 comments Monday, February 6 There are those who suggest I should blog.
