Well, I can't say it was dreadful, as a couple of hours with Wolverine and Mystique are never dreadful. But given the talent on-screen, and how good Bryan Singer set up the last installment of the X-Men franchise, I can say last night's film performed well below expectations. And given that I had read every review possible of the film going in, my expectations had been suitably lowered. Sigh. Let's hope Superman is better.

Just is. There really is no other way to say it. Man, it's hot out. Beers and patios across Edmonton have my name on them. But before that, finally I am off to see X3 tonight. I had procastinated to an extreme point, but finally it is time.

If the actual money price tag isn't too high, I would have to say aquiring Alex Tanguay is a fantastic move for the Calgary Flames. Leopold is great, and will be missed, but with Phaneuf becoming more than promised, the trade will be fantastic. Expect better numbers from Iginla, more offense in general from the Flames, and a fantastic season. Unless the price for Tanguay means shedding more players for salary cap room. Of course moving up to $44 million a team will help with that.

So I can't deny I am sad. It is different, substantially so, than two years ago, when I think it would be fair to say I was heartbroken. Sad pretty much covers it. For those who have no idea what I am talking about, the Edmonton Oilers lost game seven last night, and the Stanley Cup was awarded to the Carolina Hurricanes. Two years ago, when my hometown team the Calgary Flames went to game seven and also lost, in a very eerily similar game. So boo, but there is a bright side, in that I have faith again that Canadian teams may one day win the Cup, so long as we avoid teams from the American southeast. And my heart does go out to Brodie from Mallrats, whose undying devotion to the Hartford Whalers must feel a little redeemed, but the sadness in that when the Whale lifted the cup it was as the 'canes instead.

In an effort to not have a completely sad post, I wanted to share a tidbit from a dinner conversation I had recently with people far smarter than I. If you didn't know, males in Canada are not going to post-secondary education, at least in the same numbers as their female counterparts. A university campus has a 3-2 ratio in general, and it is a growing trend. And it isn't a relatively new trend, as it has been going on for awhile, and no one really expects the trend to reverse or even slow down substantially.

Consider, in a few short years (maybe a decade) as the baby boomers retire and these predominantly female graduates head out into the workplace, will our society change? The skilled workforce, which will be the vital piece of the Canadian economy, will be girls. How will our society change, given that the skilled workforce for so long has been dominated by boys? Something to ponder.

I really thought I would blog last night, and blog well. I wonder what stops me from writing and writing well in my blog?

But on the other front, the non-blog writing and frustration front, I am growing pretty excited about Washington. It should be a great time, with lots to see and do. And what a time to be there. We confirmed our accomodations, our flight is set, so everything that is mission critical is a go.

I asked everyone and their dog what there was to see and do in Las Vegas, but I don't have the time to endlessly ask about Washington, so if anyone has any advice drop me a line or leave me a comment. Even if it is obvious (like the Lincoln Memorial) don't hesitate.

I honestly don't know about what. Suicides in Guantanamo? al-Zarqawi's death? No, those topics don't make me feel, well, better. Me being sick? Well, no, as I really wanted to end the blog being a place where I kind of dump the minutae of my life. I'll think about it through my day, and blog when I return home.

It breaks my heart to hear that Dwayne Roloson is hurt and not going to return for the whole series. Read more...
