I can't get over how much this winter has gotten in my head, which I deduce from how much of a sun worshipper I intend to be this spring and summer. The snow here in Edmonton is almost gone (although there are flurries in the forecast for tomorrow). Patience, soon it will be gorgeous.

Speaking of spring, one of the four seasons there might be a federal election, I'm not banking on it for the spring. I think the Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper is going to hold off, and I think the Bloc is scared of an election. Especially of Gilles jumps to be the leader of the PQ. But I've been wrong before.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA SPOILERS: If you haven't seen the latest episode of Battlestar Galactica (and plan to), stop reading here. Because I'm going to rant about it. And the rant will reveal what happened.

I am upset. First of all, let me be clear, Dr. Gaius Baltar is guilty. The most guilty man in Guiltyland. He was guilty from the very first moment we saw his character and every step of the way he just added to his considerable guilt. Thousands upon thousands, billions upon billions of albeit fictional lives fell to Baltar's ego and sense of self-preservation. As I said to Allie, I almost wished he was a member of the final five Cylons so we would have the satisfaction of maybe executing him every single week. Not that I believe in the death penalty (because I don't), but because what he did was that wrong.

I'm not the only one who is upset - Allie is upset too, thinking on what else Battlestar Galactica could possibly be about now that they seem to have found Earth. I, on the other hand, have faith. I was certain it spelled certain doom when they created New Caprica, but Ron Moore and crew wrote their way off that hellish planet and back into my heart, so I'll bite again and eagerly anticipate the next season of Battlestar Galactica. Hopefully the rest will have nothing in common with Galactica 1980.

We do not inherit this Earth from our ancestors. We borrow it from Megatron. Lastly, I seek to eradicate unnecessary fees that burden our students. I speak of the portion of SU fees that are paid to CAUS. The Council of Alberta University Students. This external advocacy organization cannot match my superior intellect and brute force!

In case you're wondering, Stephen Dollansky did indeed win. And so did us humans.

Green Party leader Elizabeth May, who if she picked her place right could be the first Green MP (and a few other star candidates in good location could mean a caucus) has decided on Central Nova, up against the Hon. Peter MacKay. I think it is a mistake. Not the Peter MacKay part, I think the Green leader taking on and either beating or coming close to a senior cabinet minister is a good idea. The bad idea comes where it is a location with half the Green support as the national average. Finding an Ontario or BC Minister would have been a much better idea. Even entering Fortress Alberta would have been more sane in my mind.

Budget Day! Possibly writ dropping day (but the official Duncan projection is not)! And I hear the Parkland teachers' strike might be ending!

The other day I was at West Edmonton Mall and tried to leave outside my normal exit, only to find half a dozen police officers, a yellow-tape blockade and lots of WEM security. Allie and I left through another exit and viewed what was clearly a crime scene just in front of an exit, not even in the parking lot.

The next day I was listening to the news on the radio to hear them describe a severe assault at the West Edmonton Mall Transit Centre - good spin for the mall, shifting the location to the transit centre. I'm amazed they were able to spin it that well, as the crime scene was maybe a metre away from inside the mall, and about thirty metres away from any bus stop.

I can only hope that the American republic is shaking off their cobwebs and looking to actually become an active democracy again. The headline Anti-war protests grow in U.S. was good to see in my RSS reader. Not that I'm so inherently anti-war, or even pro-protest, but I do like to see active citizens.

There is to a degree a selfish and self-promotional reason I use that title, but that doesn't change the fact that it is true - I do indeed love teachers. I suppose not all teachers (like many, I've had one or two that spring to mind if I use the phrase "I hate some teachers"), but the vast majority are amazing people who do an interesting, challenging and important job.

A year and a bit after former Chrétien chief of staff Jean Pelletier was fired as President of Via Rail (twice no less) by former Prime Minister Paul Martin, he is apparently going to go back to work. That's got to be awkward. "So, did I miss anything?" Yeah, a little M. Pelletier. And admittedly, I had the thought that the string of revenge against Paul Martin by Jean Chrétien continues - which I'm not complaining about.

I feel bad about not blogging of late, so some thoughts:
    • Ed Stelmach's Throne Speech: Solid and balanced, but I've always been holding my breath for the budget.
    • Federal election: No idea. Maybe. Maybe not.
    • The Ryan Smyth trade (I live in Edmonton, so I hear about this a lot): Good hockey management decision, but look at the last seven losses - Kevin Lowe seems to have gutted the Oilers spirit. But for three first rounders...
    • Work: There is too much of it. There should be less.
    • Electronic footprints online (how much you learn about me by Googling me, Facebooking me, reading my blog, etc.): There might be too much of it. I don't know if there should be less, but I'm worried about mine - Google certainly returns a fair enough of it.

As Stephen Colbert said, "Well guess what, nerds? I gots me one."

It took a bit of effort, but I have a Wii! Thanks to Allie, Toys R' Us and the good baristas at Starbucks who sustained us for the four hour wait yesterday morning there is a Wii in our household. Lots of fun - very different, but I mean that in a very good way.
