8 Random Facts about Duncan

I was born early and lived in a incubator for a few days at first. I was about a month premature, which meant more then than it does now.
I am tone deaf - which makes singing, dancing, playing an instrument and learning other languages very hard. Since I am also lazy, I don't really do those four things (except maybe singing, to the detriment of those around me).
I've been married twice - but as I get older that is less and less strange or different.
I own and/or use an obscene amount of technology. The number of computers in our household per person is approaching two.
I love collecting desktop wallpaper for my various computers. My work MacBook Pro has 140 wallpapers (already) and my home desktop computer has 360. Fortunately Allie helps by taking lots of pictures when we go out that make for good wallpaper.
I have never owned a car, and have few plans to ever own one. Everybody should do their part to stop global warming, and this is my bit.
Las Vegas is likely my favourite place on Earth - I've been twice now and had a blast each time.
I had a brutal time in junior high - many would find this odd because I rather liked school in elementary, high school and on into university, not to mention I've spent my entire professional life as an education advocate of some sort. But man, did I despise junior high. Every last moment of it.

The heat is getting to me. Not just because I'm ill, but also because I lack proper air conditioning. Although we fortunately do have an air conditioner, but it requires a new approach to handle its water leaking problem properly.

We are now hip deep in the summer and I note with interest that it is the first summer in awhile that seems relatively free of political heat. Not that there is nothing of note - the always interesting federal scene continues, but we are all fortunately now used to the idea of Prime Minister Harper (who is still doing quite well when you think about it) and the imminent collapse of the government no longer seems quite as real as it did in Harper's first year and a half. I'm not trying to jinx anything, but I note that in April he will surpass Paul Martin's tenure as Prime Minister (two years and four days shy of two months).

Here at home, well, I'm glad its summer. After a few miscues and a drastic change in the political climate here in Alberta the Stelmach government is hitting a few home runs and hopefully take the summer to get back in touch with Albertans and move forward with a fresh agenda in the fall. And hey, I think the change is good - I'm glad the media is being more challenging but the opposition still has a way to go to capture that title of "Government-in-waiting." Expanding and enforcing the smoking ban, bringing the ATA back to the table to talk about the UFL and the largely unreported intelligent use of the unbudgeted surplus all spring to mind.

Still, compared to the last few years where I would say the summer represented a season of discontent in politics, I'm glad to have a rest.

I have returned from Sin City, and wow am I spent. As always Vegas was a blast - food, fun and naughtiness - but it was also scorchingly hot. Some observations:

I wish my home had a bikini pool bar
Thank goodness I didn't go to New York, New York on Friday morning
Chateaubriand is a pretty fine meal
46°C is too darn hot
Jubilee is still fun
Phantom is an awesome play
Life is easier when businesses couldn't care less what time it is
My new iPod is very fine
Three years later, marrying Allie still strikes me as the best decision I've ever made
