First, the only thing worse than Prime Minister Harper breaking his word and the spirit of his word and appointing a bunch of senators today would be the psuedo-Prime Minister Ignatieff doing the same thing, so to some degree I guess this is just the best of two bad choices. And I have nothing against the individuals themselves, but I would have still rather have had the Prime Minister choose to keep his word and dare Iggy not to appoint a bunch of Liberal hacks.

You know that as soon as any liberal found himself in the position to appoint those seats they would have - I would even bet money that they had a plan for those appointments as part of their "coalition" takeover.
I wish that we could move the senate towards an elected rather than appointed member format but since the provinces (except for Alberta) are slow to enact any legislation to do so then appointments will remain the norm.
All in all it's not a great system but it's what we have right now, and not one that is easily changed.

Yes, you can lessen the stretch mark with the right product, but it will involve a lot of trial and error.
