Monday, March 16 I'm going to start blogging again. I miss it - and perhaps more importantly it made me a better writer. The advent of twitter has started to make think in 140 character bites - which while useful is not the ideal for all things. So I'm going to establish a regular blogging schedule and do my best to keep to it. Labels: inane posted by Duncan @ 12:07 PM 3 commentsWednesday, November 19 I'm sure the answer is yes, but at this moment what to blog about escapes me. Go see the Star Trek trailer. Sign up for Twitter (likely the real reason I don't blog). Labels: inane posted by Duncan @ 5:33 PM 2 commentsWednesday, September 24 I'm stuck at home with nothing but the internet (and my dog and cat) to keep me company, as I wait for Shaw to come and fix my home phone. Given that I spend 97% of my time at work online (unlike some people I know) it feels like a waste to spend a day off surfing the tubes in the sky. But it is too cold to read a book in my yard, and again, chained to the home as I await the cable guy. Sigh. Labels: inane posted by Duncan @ 11:16 AM 0 commentsMonday, April 28 I am often horrid at posts like this - looking at my blog obviously I have to move form cheering for the Flames to the present day. Also, I was on vacation in Florida up to now, so the transition has to progress. First, Walt Disney World was fantastic. A beautiful place to visit and bond with my family and I also noticed a lot this time. Also, despite the lack of inversions, Expedition Everest was a fantastic roller coaster and was likely my favourite ride. Allie will have a metric tonne of pictures put up on her Flickr profile likely in the coming weeks, so I'll try and remember to share some photos later. Second, it would seem the world survived my departure for the week and a bit. I still haven't caught up in news and goings-on so I won't try and post about the budget or other events, but Alberta seems to be happy. I also note the conversation about the environment continues in earnest, and while the discussion on "issues" based on "facts" may still be waiting for next week but I'm happy the discussion is happening. Third, too bad about the Flames. I still stand behind my assessment that virtually any team could win the cup and that only one team will - meaning that the Flames are a competitive team and massive changes aren't what is demanded. That said, the talent pool of the Calgary Flames will eventually begin to dissipate and the time to win is soon. Retaining Huselius and Langkow seems unlikely given the modern reality of the salary cap. Nevertheless, moving on to the second round, I'm now suddenly interested in the Eastern Conference, with both the still undefeated Penguins and the nation's favourite Canadiens are garnering interest. Go Pens! Go Habs! Boo Rangers! Boo Flyers! In the west Allie's longstanding beef with the Dallas Stars means I'm disappointed with the Stars 2-0 lead in that series and I'm largely indifferent to the Wings battering of the Avs. Labels: alberta politics, hockey, inane posted by Duncan @ 6:22 AM 2 commentsSaturday, April 5 I awoke this morning to find a blizzard. Given that it is now April 6, I was not planning on finding any blizzards until around November. But sure enough, the "flurries" outside my door this morning involve buckets and buckets of snow. -4°C isn't that cold, but the snow - I am dumbstruck. And now I have decreed I shall be homebound, despite having a couple of places to go at some point this weekend. My mind had already begun moving to spring and all that implies. Labels: climate change, inane posted by Duncan @ 8:15 AM 0 commentsThursday, January 31 So this is not the death of the blog, but after staying awake all night while I thought about how busy this next month will be, I realize it will be easier if I declare a hiatus. There is a reasonable chance I may choose to blog politically (but may not...), however otherwise I'll be on hiatus until early March. Labels: inane posted by Duncan @ 6:35 AM 2 commentsThursday, January 17 I have gone over a month without blogging and prior to that I haven't done much blogging either. I don't feel particularly in the mood I guess. Labels: inane posted by Duncan @ 8:29 AM 4 commentsSunday, November 4 Now who could read the mind of the red-headed girl next door Or the taxi driver who just dropped you off Or the classmate that you ignore Don't assume everything on the surface is what you see Cause that classmate just lost her mother And that taxi driver's got a PhD I wonder if taxi driving is a better gig than I give it credit for, because Amanda Marshall's lyrics above are not just an isolated incident, as I have been given a taxi ride by two doctors as well, and I don't talk too much to every taxi driver, so for all I know that total is much higher. So, upon coming to Canada, these very smart people choose taxi driving when my country decides to ignore their degree. It never struck me as particularly lucrative, but perhaps I'm wrong. In any case, I wish those with solid credentials were recognized here. I understand why that process takes time, and the recognizing credentials needs to be done with care - you wouldn't want the engineer designing a bridge to really be something closer to a lego builder than an engineer. Still, my impression is that we have too many taxi drivers with PhDs and not enough PhDs in our country. And MDs, and other credentials. posted by Duncan @ 6:29 PM 3 comments Wednesday, October 17 cross-posted at Labels: inane posted by Allie @ 5:53 PM 3 commentsWednesday, September 26 And still largely without a rationale. I did however get to see the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney the other day - we had a pleasant lunch together as he reminisced about his time in office. To be fair, about 125 other people were there as well, so I don't want to paint a picture of intimacy when there was none. I've also got back into painting my army for Warhammer 40,000 (one of those don't ask things if you don't know what I am talking about - very geeky). The army itself is looking pretty good. I'm also dreading getting older - 29 feels old... Royalty review report = largely good. I'm no economist and I don't want to imply I follow all of the implications, but I am pleased. Throne Speech = I'm looking forward to it, election or no election. I would love to go into Quebec with the momentum Harper has built and the deflation that surrounds Dion. President of Columbia University = Awesome call-out on Ahmadinejad. Bolliger's attack was right on. That's what freedom of speech actually looks like dictator-boy, not the weak substitute of freedom and pseudo-democracy you practice in Iran. Labels: inane posted by Duncan @ 7:00 AM 0 commentsMonday, August 27 Hmm... I can't help but wonder why. Well, it isn't going to change before I go to Ottawa (I'm on off on Wednesday evening for a friend's wedding, back mid-next week). Maybe the new school year. Labels: inane posted by Duncan @ 7:29 AM 0 commentsSaturday, July 14 The Rules:
Monday, May 28 It's a busy week for me, as I go to Vancouver next week and have a lot to do before I head off. It also seems to be an oddly busy week in the world - I am so used to May and June being an early start to the summer in terms of news and political happenings, but the world is failing me. Of course, especially internationally, there is a fair amount of activity all 12 months, but this seems especially off. Maybe it is because the Legislature and House of Commons continue to sit (once they stop, lots of activity will drop off). Maybe too the by-elections in Drumheller-Stettler and Calgary help fuel the activity. No prediction yet on the Calgary-Elbow race, which by media accounts is quite close. Also for those in the capital region, I keep hearing lots of talk about who is going to run for the Progressive Conservatives and the Liberals, and it makes me pretty excited in terms of who could be sitting in the Legislature in a year's time. High quality Edmontonians are looking to make the jump, and I can't imagine a better time to get involved. Still, I love a warm and to some degree lazy summer. In my world, summer is all about planning rather than activity, and I can't wait. Especially for the warm - I for one am sick of +20 being considered hot - I want that to be the norm with +28 being hot. Labels: inane posted by Duncan @ 6:45 AM 5 commentsSaturday, May 26 I'm still ignoring the blog. And without a very good reason - just not sure what to write about. Labels: inane posted by Duncan @ 12:09 PM 2 commentsWednesday, May 16 I've been far too busy to blog of late, and I don't think that's going to change until possibly the weekend. Go Senators! Go Brian Heninger! Go Jack Hayden! Go Canmore! Go Banff! Go students! Obviously there is a lot to cheer about. Labels: inane posted by Duncan @ 7:23 PM 0 commentsSunday, April 15 After two days with the emergency glasses and then another with no sight (yes even the emergency pair did not hold up to being stepped on) I have glasses again! And hey, the weather improved to boot. Labels: inane posted by Duncan @ 5:01 PM 0 commentsTuesday, April 10 We're still missing spring - there isn't a lot of snow, but the ground is rather covered and it has nothing in common with barbeque season. Labels: inane posted by Duncan @ 8:11 AM 0 commentsMonday, April 9 Finally. Top to bottom. It took four days, although there were breaks. For example, to sleep. Seriously, it wasn't that it was messy (we do pick up after ourselves), but we had some furniture to construct and new places to put stuff. And through no action of their own, my team has made the playoffs. Labels: inane posted by Duncan @ 5:47 PM 3 commentsTuesday, April 3 In today's CBC news online, Allie found this gem: Stones guitarist Richards claims he snorted Dad's ashes. When she told me, I couldn't believe it. I said it must be a hoax, to be found on someone's myspace profile or an old Geocities page. But sure enough, CBC. Yikes. And gross. And weird. And I love the Stones and Richards as much as anyone. posted by Duncan @ 5:46 PM 1 comments Sunday, April 1 The last post was premature, but I am amazed the premature part was about spring, rather than about the federal election. Maybe Allie had it right, when you're done with winter you sometimes have to go to spring rather than wait for it to come to you. Labels: inane posted by Duncan @ 8:47 AM 0 commentsFriday, March 30 I can't get over how much this winter has gotten in my head, which I deduce from how much of a sun worshipper I intend to be this spring and summer. The snow here in Edmonton is almost gone (although there are flurries in the forecast for tomorrow). Patience, soon it will be gorgeous. Speaking of spring, one of the four seasons there might be a federal election, I'm not banking on it for the spring. I think the Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper is going to hold off, and I think the Bloc is scared of an election. Especially of Gilles jumps to be the leader of the PQ. But I've been wrong before. Apparently, if you've seen over 85 films (I am hoping they mean 85 on this list, because I can go over 85 in a year), you have no life. Some odd choices on the list - no Godfathers. Also, I would point out having kids boosts your total, as some films are watched in the name of parenthood rather than pure enjoyment. Oh, and Colin - Ocean's Eleven is pretty good. I think you would enjoy it. Edit: I miscounted the first time, and I'm still not certain on my math.
